About Us | Govan Mbeki Municipality Joint Civil Movement (gmmcivil)

Welcome to the Govan Mbeki Municipality Joint Civil Movement (gmmcivil), a dedicated non-profit organization based in Embalenhle, Mpumalanga, South Africa. Founded in 2019, our movement was born out of a shared commitment among local activists, civil society organizations, and community leaders to uplift and empower the communities within the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality.

Our Mission

At GMM JCM, we stand for social justice, human rights protection, and community empowerment. Our mission is to create a more inclusive, fair, and sustainable society where every individual, regardless of background, has access to the resources, opportunities, and protections they deserve. We work to address the social, economic, and political challenges faced by underserved communities, ensuring that their voices are heard and their rights respected.

Our Journey

In 2019, after witnessing the significant need for a collective effort to improve the quality of life in the Govan Mbeki region, local civil society organizations and community campaigners came together with a shared goal of positive transformation. This collaboration led to the establishment of the Govan Mbeki Municipality Joint Civil Movement (GMM JCM).

The year 2020 marked a significant milestone for our organization. We officially transitioned into a Section 21 Non-Profit Company and continued to evolve, securing Section 12 Non-Profit Organization status. Additionally, our commitment to transparency, accountability, and community-driven action earned us SARS approval as a Section 18/A Public Benefit Organization, and we achieved an accredited B-BBEE Level 01 Specialized (EME) Entity recognition. These steps allowed us to expand our reach and provide even more support to those in need.

What We Do

At the core of our work is community-driven action. We believe in the power of local communities to create change, and our role is to support and amplify those efforts. Our main objectives include:

  • Advocating for Social Justice: We address critical issues such as economic inequality, gender-based violence, and racial discrimination. We strive to promote policies and initiatives that protect the rights and dignity of all individuals, especially marginalized groups.
  • Human Rights Protection: Ensuring the protection of fundamental human rights is a cornerstone of our mission. We work to combat human rights abuses, offer legal support where necessary, and raise awareness about the importance of human rights.
  • Community Empowerment: Through grassroots organizing, advocacy, and educational programs, we empower communities to become leaders in their own right. We focus on providing resources and creating platforms where individuals can actively participate in the decision-making processes that impact their lives.
  • Capacity Building & Support: We provide training and resources to community leaders, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure that they have the knowledge and skills to make a lasting impact.

Our Impact

Since our founding, GMM JCM has played a pivotal role in driving change in the Govan Mbeki Local Municipality. Some of our key achievements include:

  • Facilitating community dialogues to raise awareness about social justice issues and human rights.
  • Leading advocacy campaigns that resulted in improvements in local governance and the allocation of resources for marginalized communities.
  • Providing emergency relief and assistance to communities affected by poverty, unemployment, and natural disasters.
  • Launching youth empowerment initiatives to inspire the next generation of leaders.
